‘Disobedience is the true foundation of liberty’ -Henry Thoreau
February is Black History Month. February was chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, figures central to the abolition of slavery. Abraham Lincoln freed slaves primarily through the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, declaring slaves in Confederate states free as a war measure, and by championing the 13th Amendment. After escaping from slavery in Maryland, Douglass became a national leader of the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York, during which he gained fame for his oratory and incisive antislavery writings.
